Job Description

  • Under direct supervision of the nurse manager, the incumbent will perform the following patient care responsibilities and safety measures:
  • Assist patient with admission procedure;
  • Assist patients during transfer procedure;
  • Assist patients with discharge procedure; provide for patients' personal hygiene;
  • Assist with patients' excretory needs;
  • Assist patients with meals and nourishment; and
  • Assist in providing for patient safety and comfort measures.
  • Provide clerical support to the Administrative Nurse of the designated unit. Transcribe Doctor's orders; verify, record, post and file information materials via manual and/or automated systems; evaluate and report data pertinent to the functioning of the patient care unit; interpret and apply medical terminology; coordinate intra-departmental communications; foster public relations; participate in meetings and continuing education.

Job Qualifications

Ability to perform all physical requirements pertaining to delegated nursing, PT/OT, and RT assisted tasks. Certification of Nursing Assistant from a state approved program or demonstrated equivalency. Ability to speak clearly and distinctly using appropriate English vocabulary and grammar. Ability to understand oral and written English directives. Ability to read and write standard English text. Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (add, subtract, multiply and divide). Ability to accurately complete assigned tasks. Ability to organize and prioritize work to complete assignments in a timely fashion. Understanding of basic medical terminology and abbreviations preferred. Recent ward clerk and/or appropriate clerical experience in an acute hospital environment. Skill in transcribing doctor's orders and medical information via manual or automated systems accurately, neatly and legibly. Skill in evaluating and reporting various kinds of emergent information pertinent to the functioning of an inpatient care unit. Ability to communicate on a one-to-one basis the duties of a ward secretary to float personnel and other staff members. Skill in responding to inquiries, imparting information and interpreting hospital policies and procedures to patients, public and staff in prompt and courteous manner, maintaining a professional manner. Ability to speak grammatically correct English clearly and distinctly to obtain and convey information to the public and hospital staff. Ability to read and write English to understand, interpret and record all ward clerk duties. Ability to perform with frequent interruption and distractions. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner when there are competing requirements and a heavy workload. Ability to pass an 8 hour computer data entry training course.

  • Contributes to patient comfort and well-being by rearranging bedding and changing linen, serving and removing meal trays and responding to requests for personal services, such as filling water containers, making mechanical adjustments of bed, providing assistance in changing position in bed, furnishing bedpans and urinals, and giving shampoos and back rubs.
  • Assists by positioning and holding patients for examination or treatment.
  • Turns and positions patients and places supports to prevent pressure sores.
  • Assures a safe and sanitary environment for the patient by cleaning up minor spills in kitchen and dining areas, by making beds, cribs and bassinets, and by maintaining ward, sleeping quarters and recreational areas in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Encourages ambulatory patients to participate fully in their own dressing, feeding, and hygiene.
