Provides a clear focus for clinical leadership and takes responsibility for ensuring the provision of a high standard of holistic, patient-centered care in all nursing departments by leading, coordinating and supervising nursing practice. Ensuring that all patients have their needs assessed, that plans of care are developed to meet these needs and are delivered in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Assess, monitor and manage staff numbers and attendance and ensuring coverage of hospital at all times by allocating staff, based on workload and level of competence to ensuring optimal staff usage and maintaining the safe nurse/patient ratio.
Ensure awareness, compliance and adherence to the relevant acts applicable within the environment. Maintain a safe, clean and hygienic environment for all the staff, patients and visitors ensuring that the staff are aware and informed of safety procedures. Oversee controlled drugs as per local guidelines. Perform checks on Dangerous drug totals and drug register, ensure that procedures and recording are adhered to. Bed/patient status per nursing department with number of theatre cases (done and still in operating room), labour room patients, seriously ill patients, VIP patients, staff admitted as patients, and any pending issues or incidents. Assist medical practitioners with all enquiries, possible admissions and related issues during the night duty period.
Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals. Evaluate, select, and implement systems which improve efficiency of night work operations. Control, monitor, and analyze pharmaceutical and surgical stock held in the nursing departments. Make recommendations for changes in stocks used in the department. Oversees Inventory management in all departments to ensure the correctness of items from Medical and Surgical Store and Liaise with the Billing team prior to patient discharge from units for out of hours discharges.
Maintains patient relations by facilitating open channel of communication with patients, their families, other departments, physicians, and ancillary personnel resolving patient and visitor complaints and/or channeling them to appropriate department for solution. Assumes accountability for customer satisfaction, process indicators, quality improvement plans and outcomes in work unit.
