My law enforcement career began with the state prison in Daytona Beach. Once a certified corrections officer, I completed the crossover/LEO program at St Johns River CC. In 1996, I was employed with the Daytona Beach PD. After a few years in patrol, I was promoted to the Motor Unit as I focused on traffic in between calls. I completed the 80 hour Motor Officer Certification Course in 1998, 2nd in my class. The Motor Unit is a specialized unit in Daytona Beach as there are numerous special events such as NASCAR, spring break, BCR, and several Bike Week gatherings. The unit is also primarily responsible for citywide traffic crash responses, rerouting and directing the flow of traffic throughout the city and answering calls. In March 2001, I was struck by a vehicle (uninsured drunk driver), while on duty. I was out of service for 15 months. The city of Daytona Beach is self insured and there was no light duty at that time. My career with DBPD was over. In May of 2002 I was cleared by my doctor to return to law enforcement. I applied for a United Nations peacekeeping mission overseas. This was a contract through our State Department and United Nations which was awarded to Dyncorp Corp. Of 1400 applications only 80 were accepted. I was accepted and left the US in October 2003 for Kosovo. Once in country, I was one of 7 selected for the special operations, close protection unit. I spent 14 months of a 12 month contract as a high risk operator, specialized in long distance marksmanship, and close quarter combat with SOG. My primary duties were care and protection of VIPs and high ranking dignitaries from many of the UN countries. For a 2 month period my primary detail was a Serbian Orthodox Priest, which included highly planned transportation and close protection as he visited many of the churches throughout the countryside. In March 2004, during the worst ethnic violence since the end of the war, I was responsible for the extraction of the UN employees and command staff. The last 2 months I was a training officer for the new group of operators in the SOG. Upon my return to the states, I re-certified my law enforcement certificate and intended to resume my law enforcement career. My wife had other plans and we moved to her home state where I assumed control of her family's decades long established business. As my calling has always been law enforcement, I attempted to service as a part time officer, only to be denied as I aged out for NY state civil service. As we are now relocating to Cave City, I am once again afforded an opportunity to continue my career in law enforcement.
