What I learned from the PowerPoint was that soft skills are a wide variety of characteristics that we have. It can include personality qualities, habits, and different attitudes. In the power point it discussed why having soft skills are essentials in the workplace. Some of the soft skills that I may need to work on are problem solving. I feel that I am the type of person who does not really want to lead. I like being a part of a team. I don't necessarily have to be the boss, but if you give me a task I will complete it to the best of my ability. I know that if I could just get over my fear of talking in front of people I could really stand out in the office. I did not know that one of the soft skills are “Not expecting to be promoted in the first 6 months.” I think that is listed as soft skill because the employer wants to make sure that the potential employee is willing to work hard but concentrate on patients. As I sit back and think about the numerous interviews that I have done and why I may not have gotten the job, it seems that I lacked some important soft skills. I know one time I was getting interviewed. I did not really look in the interviewers eyes because I was so nervous. There were 3 people there interviewing me. I realize how that probably made me seem unsure of myself and maybe even incompetent. I do think that this job will have different expectations of me. One being that I need to be active listening. I've worked many fast paced jobs that don’t require me to be very social because the work I had to do was very time consuming. In this profession I will be expected to sit and actively listen and record information which is something I have not had to do in a long while. Another thing that may be required of me is I know there is some idle time when I am recording information into the EHR. I could mention some stuff I’ve seen in the news thats “light” that could start a small conversation with the patient. This form of small talk could help ease the patient and make them comfortable in an already uncomfortable situation. Another soft skill that would probably be required of me in the healthcare field and not at my old job is making sure I look presentable. At my old job in housekeeping I would walk around looking and feeling like I’ve been at work for 35 hours folding clothes and cleaning restrooms. I mean my clothes would have bleach stains and wet spots from cleaning and it was normal for me to walk around like that cause i was cleaning. In the healthcare field you cannot walk around with spots on your scrubs because you want the patient to trust you and know that you are clean. This is important because I would be a reflection of the place I work and If I call a patient back to be seen by the provider and my scrubs look messy/dirty the patient may think the whole facility is not clean. Im glad that I read the powerpoint because I did not even realize that how important soft skills are and now I am more self aware of them.
