Work History

Scientist

Jif (JM Smucker)
09.2014 - 03.2025
  • Designed and executed a peanut roasting study with a new peanut roaster. Data uncovered many differences in our nut crop and product, helping Jif make better peanut butter.
  • Researched, developed, and implemented the chocolate addition method for the Creamy Clusters product.
  • Researched and refined the roasting conditions for the Jif roaster additions, producing higher flavor scoring Jif products.

Scientist

Folgers (JM Smucker)
11.2008 - 09.2014
  • Applied basic coffee roasting research from 1999 to profitably move Cafe Bustelo production and deepen Folger's roast time knowledge.
  • Reformulated numerous products in the AFH Folgers line, improving product scores while saving Folgers money.

Mechanical training and troubleshooting expert

YourENCORE
08.2012 - 12.2012

Scientist

Folgers (P&G)
02.1997 - 11.2008
  • Improved the design and function of the Custom Café brewer’s hardware, software, and product. Resolved three “fatal” issues with the early designs of the unit.
  • Formulated/reformulated coffee products, installed and tested new coffee brewers in the field. Designed, wrote, executed, and analyzed plant trials.
  • Trained service agents across the US on troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing Custom Café Coffee brewers reducing repeat service calls by 60%
  • Designed and executed a coffee roasting research study that ultimately changed Folger's understanding of coffee roast time.
  • Promoted twice from research associate, to researcher to scientist.

Researcher

Procter & Gamble
01.2001 - 01.2003
  • Formulated new, and reformulated existing coffee products, developed new coffee brewers, designed and executed plant trials, collected, analyzed, and tracked raw Custom Café brewer data from approximately 30 units across North America in near real time.
  • Developed a user-friendly Excel spreadsheet to convert 60,000 lines of raw brew and dispense data into a one page numeric and graphic report used by both Wendys and Folgers to track coffee volume and accurately monitor unit uptime and performance.
  • Formulated four new coffee products for the Custom Café brewers that maximized the coffee brew yield thru controlling the coffee roasting conditions, and optimizing the roast and ground coffees’ particle size and density. These products allowed expansion into both the convenience store and quick serve restaurant markets.

Research Associate

Procter & Gamble
01.1997 - 01.2001
  • Produced and analyzed coffee product prototypes in Folgers Coffee Retail and AFH divisions, managed and ran the coffee pilot area, used and maintained commercial coffee brewers, assisted in plant trials.
  • Designed, executed, analyzed, and summarized a coffee roasting experiment that fundamentally changed Folgers AFH Coffee’s understanding of roast speed. This work was later applied to the KC Folgers plant production roasters, enabling them to produce in spec product from traditional roasting equipment.
  • Designed, executed, analyzed, and summarized coffee plant trials in KC and NOLA Folgers plants that accurately measured the homogeneity of our whole roast coffee mixing systems. Prework and sample analysis included writing Monte Carlo simulation files and Gibb’s sampling.

Analytical Chemist

Isotec Inc
06.1990 - 02.1997
  • Analyzed isotopic enrichment and chemical purity of stably labeled compounds from production plant to product release.
  • Experience the MS, GC-MS, TOF, magnetic sector, FTMS
  • Developed and validated a new GC/MS isotopic enrichment analysis method for Isotec’s first drug compound (13C Urea).
  • Solved the Oxygen-17 analysis issue
